News

Heart N Soul Yoga Studio shut down on March 17th, 2020 due to the Covid-19 virus. We closed

days before the official mandate by the State of Virginia in accordance to Yoga Alliance. Though we quickly shifted

to online classes via Zoom (and offered special pricing to help students during this unprecedented time),

we also had to find a new space to hold classes (both in-studio and online) after it was safe to reopen. 

It is also an extra challenge being two single women business owners who supports our

whole personal lives with our studio's income.

Our beloved yoga community quickly stepped in to support us with donations for our Studio Reopening Fund

via GoFundMe. We put that money to good use, renovating an old space into our new yoga studio. 

We did not receive a government business loan and even after reopening, still have reoccurring bills to pay 

such as rent, utilities, payroll, disinfectants + PPE and insurance. The pandemic has certainly given 

lots of hardship to small businesses around the globe and this is far from over, especially as the 

Covid-19 restrictions dictate how many students we can have in one space.

If you are at a position to support us, please donate to our Fund or purchase a gift card for your loved ones.

Every donation counts and will be put right back into the Studio. Now more than ever,

we need the practice of yoga and meditation to help us stay grounded. We will continue to 

serve the Northern Virginia Community as we have done for the past 16 years.

Ashtanga Style Led Primary

This form of yoga is intensely physical and athletic. Ashtanga yogis practice a prescribed set of asanas, channel energy through the body using bandhas (locks), and concentrate on singular points using drishti (gaze) in asanas. Perfect for Beginners and Advanced practitioners.

Mysore Ashtanga Style

The Mysore style of yoga asana practice is a particular way of teaching yoga within the Ashtanga Yoga tradition as taught by Sri K. Pattabhi Jois in the southern Indian city of Mysore. The class is not "led" as a whole, but rather all instruction is one-on-one within the group class setting. Students practice their own portion of the Ashtanga sequence of asanas at their own pace. The teacher assists each student individually by giving physical adjustments & verbal instruction.

Students must know primary practice.

Rocket 

Rocket is combined with and restructured from the Primary and Intermediate Series of Ashtanga Vinyasa Yoga, as well as key postures from the 3rd and 4th advanced series of Ashtanga Vinyasa Yoga. 

Vinyasa Yoga

A flowing, dynamic form of yoga that focusing on connecting movement with breath. Vinyasa classes cultivate balance, flexibility, strength, and endurance. 

Fun Tuesday Class

A workshop style morning practice that includes in-depth explanation and demonstration of the poses and transitions in the Primary and Second Series of Ashtanga Yoga. A different set of poses each week... email us for more information!

Mysore with the Yogi: More Info

This form of yoga is intensely physical and athletic. Ashtanga yogis practice a prescribed set of asanas, channel energy through the body using bandhas (locks), and concentrate on singular points using drishti (gaze) in asanas.

The Mysore program is built upon a strong foundation of trust between the teacher and student.

**Students need to be accepted to the program by the teacher. ​

Please keep track of your class pass. Due to Covid-19, we will send you an email when you have 1-2 classes left on your pass to continue our commitment to touch-less payment options.

Please maintain personal cleanliness and bring your own yoga mat, props and towel to practice daily. It is traditional to take a hot shower before practice to increase flexibility and mental focus. Refrain from wearing any fragrances when coming to the Shala, as strong smells can make practice and breathing difficult for others. Dress in comfortable yoga clothing.

Ideally your digestive system should be as empty as possible. Refrain from eating any food at least 2-4 hours prior. Early morning practice is best after emptying bowel and bladder. It is traditional to refrain from drinking water during practice.

No water bottles, cell phones, or other accessories are allowed in the practice space. Please keep the floors clear of anything but your mat, props and towel. All personal belongings should be stored in designated cubbies during practice.

With respect to your teacher, do not add new poses to your practice unless they are added by her.

And above all, NEVER HESITATE.

Meet Isabella 

Isabella, an E-RYT by Yoga Alliance at 200 hours, has been teaching yoga for over 16 years. Born in Barranquilla, Colombia, her father escaped the Holocaust and she immigrated to the United States at the age of 11. Isabella has taught yoga in Northern Virginia for over 16 years. 

 

As a teacher, Isabella values the amazing and life-changing journey that the Ashtanga Yoga practice brought to her life, and encourages her students to find that in their own practice. Her career started as a Kundalini teacher, certified by the Kundalini Research Institute. In addition, Isabella has completed additional teacher training hours with David Swenson and John Scott, Rocket Yoga with David Kyle, Sanskrit for Aṣṭāṅga Workshops certified by the American Sanskrit Institute and also courses with Saraswati and Sharath Jois in India. She looks forward to her annual Yatra pilgrimage in India every year as a way to deepen her own yoga and spiritual practice. 

Having taught private, group classes and Ashtanga workshops in a wide variety of venues in the United States, Isabella is proud to have founded Heart N Soul Yoga Studio in 2005 in Northern Virginia. Many of her students (the oldest being 79 years old!) have studied with her for over 10 years and have witnessed the growth that comes with a committed yoga practice and the trust between student and teacher. Isabella also teaches private yoga sessions on Zoom for corporate clients and youth conferences alike.


Dedicated to her students, Isabella delivers personalized one-on-one attention to each of her students. She is gratified to see her students benefit from their yoga practices by breathing well, lowering their stress levels, and acquiring a state of relaxation. Most of all, Isabella believes that it is helpful to have an open mind and no particular expectations when beginning your practice.

Meet Laura

Laura (Lauretta) discovered the practice of yoga during graduate school at Georgetown University in Washington, DC and Italy over 10 years ago. She was born in Chicago, but spent the first few years of her life living in Asia with her grandparents. Lauretta came to love the Ashtanga practice after taking a workshop with Saraswati Jois during her 2018 USA Tour in Charlottesville, VA. Through a series of life changes, Lauretta found Heart N Soul Yoga Studio's Mysore Program and started committing herself to a regular yoga practice under the guidance of her teacher, Isabella Gutfreund. Most of all, she had the honor of joining Isabella on a memorable pilgrimage to South India in October 2019. 

Lauretta works as the Studio Manager for Heart N Soul Yoga Studio and handles all administrative tasks including creative marketing, social media, content creation, event/workshop planning and retreats. She also speaks Italian and Mandarin.

Her current pursuits include Yoga Teacher Training (200 hours), studying Sanskrit (chanting, devanagari) and looks forward to eventually teaching at the Studio. With a background in Art Education and coaching middle + high school girls, Lauretta looks forward to teaching Art + Yoga classes in Fall/Winter 2020. She remains forever grateful to Isabella for helping her cultivate the strength and confidence in all that she does.

In addition to her work in the Studio, Lauretta is also the owner of Laurentina Photography and the official Studio photographer + videographer.  She is passionate about working with small, female owned and operated businesses to help them create marketable content for their online presence.
